Welcome to ALI 304!

This course introduces learners to different literary movements. It seeks to explore the relationship between history and literary movements, authors/theorists who share a similar motive for writing and what characteristics (thematic and formal) make their works to fall within one movement. The course combines theoretical thought with artistic output, highlighting the ideas they share in similarity. The latter will be historically contextualised while drawing attention to the fluidity of boundaries between these time-scopes. It focuses on the relationship between time and space; aesthetic, critical and theoretical trends across different spaces/continents; and the roles played by each literary movement. The course traces the development of literary thought from antiquity to date, seeking to interrogate how literary movements frame how literary criticism is conducted. For purposes of grounding the course in a practical sense, we will examine selected representative works from across time and spaces.
