COURSE PURPOSE: The course provides learners with the knowledge on the theoretical
approaches in phonology and mechanisms involved in the production and
processing of sounds in human languages. EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this course, the learner should be able to:
Explain certain phonological concepts such as phoneme, allophones,
phoneme identification procedures and syllable structures by using
illustrations from various languages.
Demonstrate phonological processes and rules in transcribed linguistic
data.
Describe aspects of auto- segmental phonology using appropriate diacritics.
