This course is designed to prepare counselling professionals to think in an ethical and moral manner in all of their professional activities. The course also will examine the interplay between legal and ethical issues within mental health counselling and counselling psychology. The course will rely primarily on lectures and in-class discussions along with guest lectures by nationally known leaders in ethics. Students will learn the major ethical guidelines of the American Counselling Association (ACA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) and will have a wide array of opportunities to apply these principles to various situations. In addition, issues in mental health practice will be reviewed with a particular emphasis on the complex relationship among legal, moral, and ethical principles.
